Important Notes:

The course assessment consists of two components, i.e., the case presentations and discussions, accounting for 70% of the grade (usually 45-90 minutes of presentation plus 15-30 minutes Q&A), and a written test (usually 60-90 minutes), accounting for 30% of the grade. The final course grade will be calculated from the weighted average of both examination components. To pass the course, you need to gain at least 50% of the overall course points.

Description:

This course applies core concepts of management control to complex, real-world business cases. You analyze and adapt management control systems or practices to specific management control problems and systematically evaluate alternative designs and uses with respect to productive and counterproductive effects. Thus, you learn to engage with practical management control problems and critically discuss and reflect related solutions.

Learning Targets:

Students:

  • are able to demonstrate practical applications of different management control systems and practices to selected case studies that convey real-life business problems and decision-making situations;
  • are capable of adapting management control systems and practices to the specific use cases;
  • can evaluate alternative management control system designs and alternative management control practices uses with regard to productive and counterproductive effects; and
  • are able to present, critically reflect, and justify your recommendations.

Methods of Assessment:

Presentation with discussion (70%) and additional written test (30%)

Formalities:

You do not need a registration for the course itself. However, if you want to participate in in this seminar, please register no later than September 30, 2026, 11.59 pm, through the enrollment form on the Chair’s website. Incomplete or late registrations will not be considered.

The number of places is limited to 20 students; in case of more enrollments than number of places, allocation will be based on the number of credits earned so far (higher number of credits will be prioritized). Notification of your enrollment takes place on October 13, 2026, via email.

The kick-off seminar session will take place on October 21, 2026. If you have not canceled your registration by emailing the Chair by October 21 (11.59 pm), your seminar registration is binding: If no presentation takes place, we will allocate zero points to your presentation, combine them with the points for the written examination, and register your grade with the Faculty.
